Come on to the the-a-ta! Located on the beautiful campus of UCSD, La Jolla Playhouse is the comeback kid of the San Diego performing arts scene. Founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer, it fell into neglect and attendance dwindled. Things looked pretty grim. Then, in 1983, a young powerhouse named Des McAnuff took the reigns. And the rest, as they say, is history. Since then, the playhouse has staged 41 world premieres, 24 West Coast premieres, and seven American premieres. Plus, it has merited over 300 major honors, including the Tony® Award as America’s Outstanding Regional Theatre. |
